Our History

Our Origins

M.A.J. Law Ltd was established with a clear vision - to provide motorists across England and Wales with affordable, specialist legal representation in an area of law that is both highly technical and often misunderstood.

Over the past decade, Conor Johnstone, the owner and director of M.A.J. Law Ltd, has played a leading role in shaping the firm’s development, culture and success. With over ten years’ experience as a solicitor specialising in criminal and motoring defence, Conor has overseen the firm’s growth from a small, family-run practice in Cheshire into one of the UK’s largest motoring defence firms, with offices across the UK.

Conor’s focus on fairness, accessibility, and results has defined M.A.J. Law’s reputation nationwide. His strategic insight and practical experience in defending motoring cases have helped thousands of clients protect their driving licences and their livelihoods. Under his leadership, the firm has become known for its results, client care and transparency. More recently, M.A.J Law was awarded the Investors In People accreditation for its commitment to staff training and personal development.

At M.A.J. Law, our mission remains the same today as it was when the firm began - to give every motorist access to expert, affordable and trustworthy legal advice, ensuring that no one faces prosecution without skilled representation.

Choosing the right solicitor

Before instructing a solicitor to represent you, consider the following;

  • Check the charges. A reputable solicitor should be transparent about costs. Many offer a fixed-fee service, giving you certainty from the outset. The fee will not increase, no matter how long your case takes to resolve.
  • Choose a genuine specialist. Make sure the solicitor you speak to focuses exclusively on motoring defence law. If they also handle other areas such as conveyancing, family or employment law, they are unlikely to have the specialist knowledge required for a successful defence.
  • Speak directly with the solicitor. You should always have access to the solicitor handling your case. If you can’t, it’s likely your matter will be delegated to an unqualified caseworker or clerk - which can lead to frustration and poor communication.
  • Avoid referral sites. Some websites that appear to be law firms are actually marketing agencies that sell your case details to solicitors for a fee. Always contact a law firm directly to ensure you’re dealing with qualified professionals.
  • Look for transparency. Genuine firms will offer initial advice free of charge and explain your options before taking payment. Be cautious of anyone asking for payment immediately, especially before a proper discussion about your case.
  • Don’t limit yourself locally. The law is the same throughout England and Wales. Many of the best motoring solicitors operate nationally, so there’s no need to restrict yourself to a local high-street firm if you can instruct an experienced specialist elsewhere.
